I’m Moving to Substack in 2024

And I’ll take you with me if you’d like to “come along for the read”. Otherwise, you can opt out now. Here’s what you need to know.

Hi folks,

It’s been a while. After a lot more research and musing, I’m now deep into writing my novel. It’s a fascinating journey. But we can talk about that down the line. Here’s the news: After considerable thought and reflection, I’ll make the move from Medium to Substack in the new year.

I’ve begun setting up and designing my page and newsletter, although I won’t post anything until spring 2024. The newsletter is called “Write Thinking” and the tagline is:

I’ll leave all my current “writing advice” articles here on Medium in perpetuity, but I won’t add any new content.

The Substack page/newsletter will cover fresher, more stimulating ground which — while still of interest to anyone engaged in creative writing and reading — may appeal to a broader demographic than “the aspiring writer” alone.

To begin, there’ll be one new post/newsletter each month. That’s because of the depth and quality of the content I’ll share with you. It’ll take time to write and time to digest. That frequency also allows room for a robust and intellectually nutritious conversation between posts.

We’ll explore literature, storytelling, the philosophy of writing, and historical, social, cultural, and critical perspectives. I hope not only to offer original, thought-provoking and useful content but to stimulate a valuable exchange of ideas between members of a supportive community in the spirit of open inquiry and respectful discourse.

This won’t happen overnight. It takes time to build community, and it takes deep work to create the material we’ll be sharing.

Initially, everything will be free.

Eventually, I intend to add a paid subscription option. But there will always be free content, too. I don’t wish to exclude anyone from everything.

If you currently follow my writing here or have generously subscribed to get notified of new stories via email, I’d like to “take you along for the read”. But you can opt out either now or later, as you wish. This is how it works:

  • If you follow me here but haven’t subscribed by email, please head over to the Substack and subscribe for free here.
  • If you’ve already subscribed via Medium to get notifications from me via email , you don’t need to do anything; I’ll transfer your subscription automatically. If you want to opt out, just cancel your email subscription here before January 31, 2024 and you’re done. If you forget, you can always unsubscribe from Substack later. I hope you’ll see there’s nothing to lose by giving it a chance.

Either way, remember that — unless you all rush over now to Substack breathless and eager to get going! — we won’t be “going live” until spring ‘24.

Here’s that link again. While there’s nothing to read yet, you can subscribe early to be the first to know once we start: Write Thinking. And if you know anyone else might be interested, share the link and let them know!

Whether you’re “in” or “out”, thank you for following my work here and for all the generous comments and positive conversations we’ve shared over the years. It’s been awesome.

If you have questions, just ask. I hope to see you on Substack to share some “write thinking”!

Best wishes,
